Over the holidays I was driving from the in-laws house in Arkansas and saw five large birds perched on a large, leafless tree. My first thought they were buzzards, but as the vehicle approached we were amazed - bald eagles. Stopped the car on the other side of the tree, but it was not far enough away as they all took flight.

This is ninety-nine year old John William Finn the oldest surviving Medal of Honor recipients for actions at Pearl Harbor sixty-seven years ago today. The memorial was held in front of National Museum of the Pacific War in Fredericksburg, Texas.

This is a life-size doorway that people could walk through at the 'ICE Exhibit' - one thing that amazed me was the clarity of the frozen water - not as cloudy as an ice cube would be. Some of the previous posts were frozen with 'color' inside - for me, I prefer traditional 'ice' and will post a few illustrating the clarity of those in the next few days.

Due to haze filling the air - amplified with distance - this was not the optimal capture, but nice terrain and stratification layering the scene.

Several mountain ranges are named Sierra Madre (Spanish for "the mother of all saws") and these distant peaks are located in northeastern Mexico (photographed from Texas with the unseen Rio Grande River passing between.)

My grandmother used to tell bedtime stories in order to get her visiting grandchildren asleep. In the hot summertime, we'd all sleep in a long room called 'the sleeping porch' basically a room on one end of the house with rows of beds and walls of open windows.

I loved her stories, but prayed for a breeze.

One of the tales that stuck with me was about 'the Grasshopper and the Ant' (which I later learned was based on one of Aesop's Fables.) Her version was longer, but the point was the same and appropriate even in this age.

Intersecting Thunderbirds

The US Air Force 'Thunderbirds' were a big hit at the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show. The jet on the left is sharper because I was following it with my camera by 'panning' and told my partner, Allan, to yell when they were intersecting. Given complete control and chorography I would have had them crisscross further to camera right for a little better lighting angle ;-) But this vantage point does provide a better capture of the instrumentation's glow from the cockpit.

Saturday evening flew by for me; almost as fast as this F-15 Eagle.

Upside down is the 'wing walker' I posted a couple of days ago. No doubt she is tethered, or at least holding on for dear life, during this maneuver at the Fort Worth Alliance Air Show.

It would take a lot of wine for me even to be able to make the ride up in this biplane!

Speaking of wine, I will be at WineAlicious in Duncanville tonight, Saturday Oct 18. The wine tasting is being held between 5 - 8 PM where you can see some of my photography on 20x30 inch canvas prints :-)

This is the vehicle discharging all the toxic waste in the environment of yesterday's post. I referred to it as a 'monster truck' - don't know what it is other than a polluter. The purpose of it at the air show was to race a jet. Whatever.

This biplane is piloted by Gene Soucy and features Teresa Stokes as the 'wing walker' (not to be confused with a 'wing rider' which is tethered in one place.) I have some other photos, but it is difficult to discern a person walking around up there; anyway, they put on a great show at the Alliance Air Show!

FYI, the sky looks grayer in this photograph as a result of some monster truck simultaneously spewing smog on another runway.

Actually, this was taken at sunset a couple of days ago as I was driving through Mineral Wells, Texas. This helicopter was used in Vietnam but is now on display at a memorial that is being built. A month ago a ceremony was held to 'hoist the Huey' helicopter upon this pole - details of that can be read here. No mention if they have reserved land nearby for an Iraq memorial to be built in forty years.

A couple of Texas longhorns from the cattle drive down the main street of Bandera last weekend - part of a celebration of the 155th anniversary of the community. The different colors and markings on their skin is fascinating to me.

Over the weekend I attended a parade in Bandera, Texas - many of the entrants were symbols of the Old West. This man is dressed as George Armstrong Custer of 5th Cavalry fame who died in The Battle of the Little Bighorn.
