Years ago an elderly neighbor, Mrs. Wynn, would suspend a hummingbird feeder from the eave of her porch. As a kid, when visiting her, I had an appreciation for watching the hummingbirds sip the homemade nectar, but my attention span was short - similar to the duration any hummingbird would feed before darting back into the sky.

Nowadays, perhaps it is because I'm older, I find that I can spend hours observing these fascinating creatures as they gulp and fend other hummers away from their swinging 'flower'.

For me, it is entertaining (I am easily amused) to see imagery in other objects. For example, the rock formation in the background is known as Mule Ears Peak and if you have a bit of imagination it does look as if two 'ears' protrude from the rocky landscape.
The arrangement of three pads of the prickly pear cactus in the foreground have always reminded me of Mickey Mouse -- one pad being the head and two on either side as the ears. Perhaps, that is a stretch, so I won't bore you with any of my cloud files (plus, I don't want to be sent away for any Rorschach inkblot tests ;-)

People sometimes confuse javelina (hav-uh-LEE-nuh) with wild feral pigs, but they are not closely related. Javelinas have poor vision, but a highly developed sense of smell. They are not typically aggressive, but can be if food is involved.

Tuesday is Earth Day. Sadly, every day our planet suffocates and suffers a little more - even in remote areas far from large population centers such as the area I photographed around Big Bend, Texas.

In this image the distant hills and mountains to the left are completely obstructed from view by smog. There were many times I would try to appreciate and visually 'imagine' the detail and color of the landscape, but could not raise my camera realizing the image would not photograph well and be void of any pleasurable visual element.

Many feel we may be 'green' and environmentally conservative, but obviously there is more we must do in the footprint we leave and those we elect.

I find cemeteries fascinating, although my preference is not to be buried in one. ;-)

This image is a burial ground in Terlingua, Texas - just down the road from the previous posting at Lajitas. Both are out of the ordinary (compared to groomed green lawns in less arid regions of the world) and aside from a lack of water, much of this ground appears to be rock - cannot imagine digging a grave - perhaps they just lay rocks on top.

As far as me, cremation and scattering of ashes will do fine.

Mockingbird

While I appreciate birds, there are times I would prefer this particular song bird eating rather than singing. It merits its name due to 'mocking' the songs of other birds and will run through a chorus of clatter well before dawn.

In spite of borrowing jingles from other birds, a mockingbird is also very territorial - even with humans. I recall with a chuckle one mockingbird having a nest between two buildings and anyone walking between them would get dive bombed until they left the territory of the mockingbird.

Time and storms have reduced this structure to a shell standing in the desert.
After horrific straight-line winds night before last I thought my house might look like this one I photographed in Big Bend National Park. Thankfully, only minimal damage appears to have resulted from my brush with recent spring storms, but some of my neighbors have not fared as well - loosing chimneys and roofs - fortunately, no loss of life.

In spite of last week's atypical snowfall, this week is beginning to look a lot like spring. Plants are budding and even some pear trees are blossoming. Generally, you do not want dandelions in your yard, but I welcome the sight after having a winter with nothing growing.

Some folks use the 'greens' from dandelions in salads and claim they are nutritious, but my concern is what if this is like identifying mushrooms - you pick the wrong kind and suffer the consequences. Yesterday, I even misidentified what I thought were azaleas on danthro's blog, oops! So, I won't be eating any dandelion greens :-o

The previous image was post processed in black and white because her eyes were so blue in the light of the ice cream parlor -- they appeared 'photoshopped' ...but for today I have decided to post them in living color.
Don't get me wrong, there is Photoshop in use in the image where I have tweaked levels, shadows and highlights to give it a more 'high key' feel, but other than that these are her God given eyes, because as in the song, "baby has blue eyes" :-)

Awkward Dismount

The stance and positioning of this male cardinal in the top image immediately brought to mind the tall ramp for 'ski jumping' in the winter Olympics (he just needed some snow and skis ;-)

With the lower image appearing as if he had a mishap. But he was fine, just an awkward appearing take off.

Note, the lines in the background are from the side of the 'rusted boathouse' in yesterday's post. The metal boat shed is built on the side of a hill (where you see the cardinal images) that slopes down to the lake. My positioning for photographing the boathouse (previous post) was from 'above' proving an atypical glimpse of the water below.

The Carly Simon song You're So Vain comes to mind whenever I have to do this. But the time has come for an updated image and what better place to initially 'share' it than on my blog? Dueling Cranes

I had a conflict whether or not to post this image. But the lines and geometry of it appealed to me, plus I liked how the sun seems to flare at the juncture where the cranes seemingly collide.

The second rendering is a blueprint archetype of the scene and just seemed to fit the 'building' theme.

In the category of 'I found this interesting' -- I stumbled upon this green plant growing amid sticks, stones and thorny briars in the dead of winter. After searching various online databases, I am still not certain 'what' it is, might be a form of skunk weed, bear's paw, or even a pear weed.

Many older buildings have beautiful details that a person would never see, or appreciate, from ground level. With a telephoto lens I was able to capture this architectural adornment perched on The Old Red Courthouse, and then render it into black and white.

If only I could render my abs this easily.

Wrapping up some of my downtown drama highlights, my favorite building in Dallas is called Fountain Place. From a distance it resembles an abstract rocket, but zoom in to the top and it fits right in with other pyramidal pinnacles of the city.
