A cliff of columnar basalt across from Tower Falls in Yellowstone National Park; large floods of basalt lava preceded mega-eruptions of superheated ash and pumice 500,000 years ago. These cliffs are a textbook example of a basaltic lava flow with their well defined joints and hexagonal columns.
