On the street in front of this building is where President John Kennedy was gunned down. Conspiracy theories abound, but the sad fact is one of the great presidents of the U.S. lost his life here. One can only wonder how history would have played out if that tragic event had never happened.
As a baby on that ill-fated day in 1963, I have no recollection of the event. But year's later, in the 1980s, I met a girl named June that was also a freshman attending The University of Texas at Austin. We were both actively involved in one of the student organizations together. It turns out she was the oldest daughter of Lee Harvey Oswald, the man blamed for killing President Kennedy.
I would have probably never known her ancestry had she not been 'outed' a couple of years later by one of the gossip tabloids, The National Enquirer. As far as I know, no one in college thought any less of her, but after that she seemed to cloister herself and withdrew from our group.
I have a couple of relatives that I wish were not a part of my family tree; but, I cannot image growing up under that burden.
